Chapter Twenty-Seven

Sira

I’m shaking so bad when I tear off my veil and lean over the potted rose bush to vomit that I miss the pot altogether. Bane’s thick index finger pointing straight at me is seared in my mind’s eye like the condemning finger of unbreakable fate. I press my hand against my chest, my breath burning faster than my throat can handle.

Uri’s warm hand rests on my back as Jasper’s clear voice seeps through my shock-induced haze. “You did well, Sira. It’s over now.”

I flinch. Has Jasper lost his mind? Exactly what does he think is over after that shithouse of an audience? Bane waded into his court with the grace of an avalanche, and not only did he kill a man, but he also openly questioned Jasper’s authority and wreaked havoc among the nobles. There’s only one way this madness ends.

I straighten and wipe my dirty mouth. “End this now. Just give me back to him.”

The tension in Jasper’s aura snaps, bathing him in an angry red glow. There’s a snarl in his voice as he asks, “Are you an idiot? Why would I give that mongrel anything, let alone hand you over for torture?”

My voice cracks as I yell. “Did you not see anything at all in there?” I point toward the throne room. “He’s coming for you, Jasper! He’s already playing your court like a fiddle and laughing!”

“He’s just one man, Sira, and his words are hot air,” Elivah says.

I curl my hands into fists, barely containing the urge to scream at the top of my lungs. “One man? He killed a man in there, Jasper! It’s as easy for him as breathing but far more enjoyable! He made a fool of you! Send me back and end this madness before more people die!”

Jasper’s voice is rock hard. “The madness is in you, Sira.”

I know I should stop flailing at his ego, but this is too important to worry about pride. I can’t sit around doing nothing, so I lift my chin. “It’s my final wish. Send me back to Bane. You owe me that.”

Jasper’s hand lifts to strike my cheek, and I brace myself. He stops just in time, his trembling hands curling into a fist, one long finger aimed at me.

“I will never give you to that dog. You have succumbed to your fears, Sira Fisher, so you must pay the price.”

He turns his back, his shoulders stiff as iron. “Elivah, she’s all yours.”

I flinch. Elivah stalks toward me, his aura crackling with predatory focus, a starlight gleam in his black eyes. So much for Jasper doing right by me and protecting me and all that fish guts!

I back up. “No!” Shit, why today of all days? My nerves are raw as freshly killed deer already.

Elivah doesn’t stop.

“Get the fuck away from me,” I shout, turning to run.

He catches me and flings me over his shoulder with superhuman strength. I pound on his back, feeling tears sting behind my eyes. “Jasper?!”

Uri rests his hand on Jasper’s rigid arm.
